General

  1. Can I print the eBook?
  2. The eBook is protected, so that only 1 page can be printed at a time.
  3. Read Offline on your PC/Mac- *Requires Adobe Air Installation*
    • Once you login to the eBook site using your account you will notice a button “Download iPublishCentral Reader”

    • Click on the download button to go to installation page. Click on install button to setup iPublishCentral reader on your system.

    • Copyright and version information screen is displayed.
    • The iPublishCentral Reader bookshelf is displayed. If the user is logging in for the first time, then a message "No books have been downloaded to the bookshelf" is displayed.

    • Click the Login button on the upper right corner of the screen.

    To log in into iPublishCentral Reader, you should have an online account in iPublishCentral Publisher’s portal. Account type can be either an Normal user or an Institutional user.

    Log in as Normal user

    1. Select Normal User.
    2. Enter http://ebooks.hkupress.org/ in the Site URL field.
      • Enter the user name in the Username field
      • Enter the password in the Password field
      • Click the Sign In button

    If the login credentials are incorrect, then an error message will be displayed "Failed to Authenticate. Invalid Username/password".

    Note : Please be informed that the iPublishCentral reader is an Adobe Air based application Currently, Google Chrome has issues detecting the Adobe Air files which is already installed on the computer. So, please use the Internet Explorer or Firefox browser to Install / un-install the iPublishCentral application and let us know if there is any concerns. 


  4. Read Offline on your Apple iPad®
    • Download the iPublishCentral Reader  from the App Store.
    • Tap on Get Books and Select Hong Kong University Press from the drop down. 
    • Login to the app with your username and password. 
    • Tap on the eBook Cover to download. 
    • Go to All Books and tap on the eBook to read offline.
  5. Tap on Get Books and Select Hong Kong University Press from the drop down. 
  6. Login to the app with your username and password. 
  7. Tap on the eBook Cover to download. 
  8. Go to All Books and tap on the eBook to read offline.

  10. Do you offer titles in other digital formats?
  11. Yes. Information about other digital content programs in which HKU Press participates is available at http://ebooks.hkupress.org
  12. What am I buying?
  13. Your purchase entitles you to view and interact with HKU Press content either online at ebooks.hkupress.org, or offline with the iOffline reader. Both reading options employ custom applications built on Adobe technology.
  14. Do you offer bundled print and e-book content?
  15. Not at this time. To purchase print editions of HKU Press titles, please visit www.hkupress.org
  16. Where can I buy a print copy of an HKU Press book?
  17. If you are interested in print versions of any of the HKU Press titles in our e-book program, please visit www.hkupress.org.
  18. What technology is required to view HKU Press e-books?
  19. Purchasing and reading our e-books online requires a live Internet connection and an Internet browser with the Adobe Flash Player plug-in installed. Flash Player is a cross-platform application that delivers rich content to over 99% of Internet users.

    Readers who have installed the iOffline reader on their computers will be able to read their e-books without an Internet connection after downloading the titles to which they have subscribed. The iOffline reader is built on Adobe AIR technology, which delivers the same user experience as reading our e-books online, but does not require a browser.

    Linux users:

    Though Adobe AIR can be installed on Linux operating systems, proper functioning of the iOffline reader is not guaranteed.
  20. How soon am I charged for my purchase?
  21. A charge will immediately appear on your bank statement under the name "Impelsys" for the purchase of your e-books at http://ebooks.hkupress.org.

  22. How do I view my e-books online?
  23. Our e-books can be viewed on any computer or hand-held device that is equipped with Adobe Flash Player.
    Once you have logged into our e-bookstore, your "My Bookshelf" page will display the e-book(s) to which you have access. Clicking on a book cover or the "Read It" link will open the associated e-book.
  24. Can I read my e-books offline?
  25. Yes. Readers who have installed the iOffline reader on their computers will be able to read their e-books without an Internet connection after downloading the titles to which they are subscribed. The iOffline reader is built on Adobe AIR technology, which delivers the same user experience as reading our e-books online, but does not require a browser. Additional offline reading options are currently being developed.
  26. Can I download my purchases?
  27. Yes. After logging into our online e-book store, a "Download iPublishCentral Reader" button will appear on the top right of your Bookshelf page. Click on this button to go to the iPublishCentral reader installation page. Click on the install button to set up the iOffline reader on your system.

    When you use the iPublishCentral reader for the first time, you'll need to provide:

    • Account URL — Enter: http://ebooks.hkupress.org

    • Username — Enter the account name you use to access your titles online.

    • Password — Enter the password you use to access your titles online.


    The 
    iPublishCentral reader will verify your account details. If the credentials you have supplied are correct, the reader will continue to load. Once the application has loaded, you'll see a list of all the books that you have subscribed to online, with a "download" link for offline reading.
  28. What's the difference between ViewInside and the e-book reader?
  29. ViewInside offers users the opportunity to sample e-book content without committing to a purchase. Readers can explore a limited number of pages of each title, search within the content, and change viewing options.
    Users who purchase an e-book receive access to the complete text, as well as annotation and bookmarking features, copy/paste, and printing. Notes, bookmarks, and comments are also consolidated across the user's entire "bookshelf" of purchased content.
  30. How do I log into my account?
  31. Click on the "Login" link on the top right of the e-bookstore home page to get to the login screen. Type your credentials into the username and password fields and click the "Login" button to access your account.
  32. How do I change my password?
  33. Click on the "My Folder" link and choose the "Profile Setting" option. From the drop-down list, choose "Change Password." Enter a new password, and click "OK." Your credentials will be reset to use the new password.
  34. How do I use the search option?

    Type a search term or phrase in the search text box and click on "Go" to search the e-book content. Your search results will appear in a column on the right-hand side of the page. Specific search terms usually result in more targeted results. Note: The search option is disabled when viewing an e-book in the full-screen mode.
  36. How can I change my view of the page?
  37. The top panel allows you to change your view of the book by clicking on one of its icons. Scrolling over the icons before clicking will initiate a pop-up burst indicating what that particular icon can change. These include:

    • Switch to double pane view.

    • Switch to single pane view.

    • Zoom the page.

    • Fit the page to height.

    • Fit the page to width.

    • Toggle full-screen mode.
  38. How do I bookmark a page?
  39. The top panel in the reader has the Bookmark option. Clicking on it will bookmark the page being currently viewed. You can check for the pages that have been bookmarked in the 'My Bookmarks' segment in your 'My Folder' page.
  40. How do I add my personal notes throughout my e-book?
  41. Right click on content to which you want to add notes and choose "add notes" from the option list. You can check for these notes in the "My Notes" segment on your "My Folder" page.
  42. How often do you add content?
  43. New content is regularly added to our e-book program. If you don't see the title you're looking for now, it may be available soon, so stay tuned. You can also email us with your requests.

  48. What is the Browser and Flash requirement to print the eBooks?
  49. The print functionality will work with Flash player 10.3 in all the browsers.
    Note: Google Chrome does not allow to downgrade the Flash player, so use a different browser in this case.
